Agency Information
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice allows students to earn up to six credits for their participation in field experiences relevant to their major. Only juniors or seniors in good standing with the University will be allowed to participate in the extracurricular studies program. Fifty (50) hours of service are required for each credit to be earned. Students are required to register for at least 3 credits, and volunteer for 150 hours unless prior permission is granted. Students may also register for an additional six credits that can be used for (elective) credits towards graduation. The student's internship service will generally be voluntary, although paid experiences are permitted. In addition to their work for your department or agency, students have academic responsibilities intended to enhance their learning experience. Agencies interested in student interns should contact either the internship director or the Career Management Center (683-4388).
Should you be interested in having one of our extracurricular studies students to work for you as an intern, we would ask the following:
- That you provide a meaningful learning experience through the student's work as an intern;
- that the student be given an overview of your program and services;
- that you provide a relevant and challenging use of the student's skills along with appropriate supervision and training;
- that the internship contract be signed by the student's field supervisor; and
- that you provide a brief, written evaluation of the student's performance on a form that the faculty director will provide.
It will be the director's responsibility to assign a grade for the student's internship, but your evaluation and recommendation will weigh heavily in the grading. All interns will be graded Pass/Fail.
If these conditions are acceptable to you and if you think that services of one of our students would be an asset to the work of your program or agency, then we will try to find a suitable person for you. Of course, the decision to accept or reject any student that we might suggest will be entirely yours.
